3 Decorating Mistakes I’ve Made (And How I Fixed Them)
Let’s pick back up with my client Katie!
I was able to help her select and decide on…well almost everything!!
Paint colors.
Floor stain color.
Furniture purchases.
I helped Katie with the selection of her new sectional sofa, neutral caned tv console table, round side table, floor lamp, arched mirror, lanterns, chevron fire screen, glass sofa table, rugs, mantle decor and accessory shelf decor.
(We are currently working on things like accent chairs and curtains.)
Would you like a little help with decorating too?
You are in the right place friend!
I am so glad you are here today, because I am about to spill the beans on 3 of the most common decorating mistakes I see all the time and how to easily course correct them!

Signature HwH Decorating Consultation
$175
What To Expect
My Signature Home with Heather Consultation is a 60-75 minute appointment where I come to you!
A budget-friendly option (currently $175) for anyone who wants to bounce ideas, discuss options for possible new room layouts, rearrange existing small furniture and receive on the spot feedback with fresh ideas on how to update your home and solve the pain points that are frustrating you.
This is YOUR time and your chance to pick my brain on anything.
We can walk every room in your home and I will offer on the spot suggestions as we go through each room.
OR, we can focus on a single room or space and do a deep dive!
During the consultation I will often “shop your home,” by pulling decor from other rooms and possibly rearranging existing furniture to give a single room a refresh for free!
If time allows, we can also hop online together in order to shop for new options to help you bring the refreshed vision together.
The HwH Signature service may also include:
Paint color consultation, hands on styling of table or shelf decor, mantle display, narrowing down design choices for specific spaces, online shopping of furniture selection and measuring for spacing.
If this service sounds like something you are interested in –
I would love to help you!
Let’s finally finish off that room and update your spaces with that designer look you love on an affordable budget!

Let’s go!
I’ve been passing these home decorating tips along to all of my Home with Heather clients…for the last two years and it turns out, they have been super helpful to my clients!
Now it’s your turn!
Because while my HwH clients are super pleased with the help they have received from me…
I want to help you too! 🙂
Now, let’s get to those 3 decorating mistakes and how to easily fix them!
3 Common Decorating Mistakes
1. Using Too Many Things & Too Many SMALL Things.
This is a common decorating mistake we all tend to make and fall victim to.
Here’s how it happens.
Example #1
It’s a holiday and you carry the Easter, Christmas, Halloween, Valentines day bin from the basement and you feel the need to display all the things from all the years past that spread the holiday cheer.
The issue is, you just added holiday stuff on too of everyday decor stuff and now your space feels cluttered and over-crowded =
Too many things and too many small things...everywhere.
One quick fix for this is to first edit your flat surfaces by removing a few small table decor objects and items and storing them away until after the holiday is over.
Then, once the holiday has past, you are able to bring back the everyday decor and it instantly feels like a refresh – for free!
Here is another example of how this decorating mistake happens.
Example # 2
You just got home from a Target run or a T.J. Maxx haul where you picked up a cute artificial succulent plant, small Spring wooden sign and a little basket.
You are now trying to arrange them on your console table and you just can’t seem to get all these cute new pieces pulled together to look just right.
You have fallen victim to the easy trap of =
Too many things, too many small things.
Here’s the fix for too many things & too many small things.
Less is more friend.
When you are getting frustrated because all of the new fabulous finds you picked up at Target or T.J. just aren’t working for you…it’s most always because you are working with too many things and too many small things.
We need to simply zoom out and put down all of the tiny things.
Instead, of feeling like you have to use all of the things, try selecting just one larger, more oversized item, like the glass jug on the far right of my mantle and use that as your focal point.
No need to fill the mantel from edge to edge with all of the things and small things.
No need to fill the flat surface of the buffet table, edge to edge with all the small things.
Just one oversized item that you love does the trick.
In the case of the mantel, I like to balance out the other side with a set of three candle holders that offer height without feeling cluttered with too many things.
The candle holders also work because they are the same color and type of item, versus too many things and too many different things that do not speak the same language.
Pro-Tip: When trying to create a vignette of table decor, use a “grounding piece” to display 3 items of varying heights.
In the dining room table picture above, I am using an oval woven flat base to ground the grouping of 3 items for dining table decor. On the buffet sideboard, I am using a flat wooden tray to place the empty glass apothecary jar on.
2. Not Using ROUND Decor.
Take a look around the room you are in right now as you are reading this.
What do you see?
Straight lines.
Straight lines are what hold our homes up.
We need them in our life.
But?
When we have the chance…we need a break in the straight!
Straight lines are everywhere from window trim molding, kitchen appliances and cabinets, door frames, furniture…our eyes see straight all the time!
So when we introduce ROUND, our eyes find a soft…and…
More interesting place to land and look!
Look at this entry way picture one more time.
How many round decorative objects do you spy just around that straight entryway console table?
FOUR!
Round is why we love:
Round mirrors above a console table.
Round lamps on a straight side table.
Round floor lamps in a corner.
Round vases on a rectangular coffee table.
Round candles on rectangular coffee table books.
Round Mirrors on a wall shelf.
Round chairs in a corner.
Round wicker baskets on the floor.
Round is why round swivel chairs are ALL the rage right now.
Round side tables in between chairs.
Do you want me to keep going? 🙂
I’ll stop there.
Not incorporating rounded decor in a room is a mistake I used to make and maybe you are guilty of it too.
The wonderful news is that it’s an easy fix!
The next time you have a space that can accommodate a round rug in the entry way, round side table at the end of your sofa, round ceramic lamp on your dresser or nightstand…
DO IT!
Reach for round whenever you can!
Round gives a break in the straight, that of course we need in our lives.
But don’t let straight lines boss you around! 🙂
3. Not Using Greenery, Plants or Flowers! (Artificial works too!)
I used to live in a land (home) where we did not have any house plants!
Because?
Plants require water. Ha! 🙂
And I could barely keep up with feeding our 3 little girls, let alone watering plants!
So, I get it!
I feel you on not having a green thumb, not having the time to water and all of the things.
BUT!
The rooms and spaces in our home crave color, texture, soft shapes.
Plants provide depth and life to a room, not to mention they eliminate air pollutants and help to boost our mood!
Plus the leaves and petals are part of the round reasoning equation from above!
They are SOFT lines in a world full of straight!
If you are hesitant but willing to try a real house plant:
I would start with the super easy = Pothos Plant, pictured above in the tripod planter in our living room.
We also have a Pothos plant in Eve’s Coastal bedroom on her shelf.
Proof that if a teen girl can take care of this house plant…I think you can too! 🙂
Pro-Tip For Pothos Plants:
Pothos plants prefer low to medium light versus direct sun light. It’s easy to know when they need to be watered, because their leaves will droop and begin to curl in. I water our pothos once a week!
I have another small pothos plant on our kitchen counter, along with a bouquet of fresh peonies.
You already know from this master bedroom bedding post, that I love cutting my pink peonies and bringing them inside, when they are in full bloom!
Artificial works too!
I have and use a mix of real house plants and flowers along with artificial stems and faux trees!
Pictured below are these artificial faux stems from Amazon.
I love this set of artificial stems because they are affordable for 5 branches, the stems are tall and give a light and airy vibe without being too fussy!
I recommend cutting off the bottom of the stems, once you know the height that you want them to stand inside the vase. In other words, I don’t bend the bottom and leave it that way, because then they REALLY look fake in a clear vase! 🙂
Bottom line?
Bring in the greenery and plants!
They will wake up a stale room and bring energy into the space!
Ok friend!
