I have a secret.
Ok, ok…
It’s not really a secret at all.
One of my favorite things to do in early Fall, that helps to ease the ache of letting go of our fun in the sun beach days is…
Taking my annual trip, 30 minutes North of our home, to the best Amish greenhouse, located just over the Maryland line into Pennsylvania.

To know me is to know that I love pink and purple mums. 🙂
I have tried to fill my cart and car with other traditional Fall color mums…
But somehow?
My heart always goes back to decorating our Fall porch with my favorite colors of the rainbow.

Best Tips For Fall Front Porch Decorating & Inspiration
Well friend, if you were to drive by today and say hello, this is the Fall porch and pup that will greet you!

You might think that I make Willa pup sit and smile for these photos…
But the truth is?
She loves to perch on the porch and protect this house. Ha! 🙂

Now let’s get to those best tips and ideas for decorating your porch like a pro this Fall, with all the affiliate links you need linked at the bottom of this post!
Pro Tips For Decorating Your Front Porch
The first thing I do when I start to decorate our front porch for any season is Pro Tip #1…
*Pro Tip: To remove everything from the porch!
I love starting with a clean slate by removing all of our porch furniture and decor, because it allows me to reorient the mainstays like our tall black planters and Adirondack chairs.
By clearing away everything, even briefly, also allows fresh space to breathe and an opportunity to create something new without being pigeonholed into the way it was or has always been.
Next?
A little porch polishing!
AKA: sweeping the cobwebs from the steps and corners or hosing the steps down is also usually in order to reset the stage for the next season.

In my case, the rain did the heavy lifting for me this year!
And then?
Start to play with your petals and pumpkins!

*Pro-Tip: I arrange of my planters, pumpkins, baskets and solar lanterns off to the side and corral them according to type and then I start slowly adding them to the porch.

*If you want to see our Fall porch from last year, plus a before and after of when I painted our front door and trim black along with the BEST TIP on how to keep mums alive, then you definitely want to click back to this post from last Fall: “Our Front Porch Then & Now and How To Keep Mums Alive.”
When I start to decorate our front porch for any season, I usually always start with the largest planters or trees.
If you have ever heard me talk about styling accent pillows on a sofa, you will usually hear me advise using oversized matching pillows that I refer to as “anchor pillows” on the ends of the sofa and then working your way in.
I do the same thing with our porch. 🙂
Below, I started with the two largest mums and put them inside the tall blank planters, to create a sense of symmetry.
*Pro-Tip: Use 2 large “anchor pillows” or “anchor mums” if you will and work your way out from there!

Next, start playing and adding what feels right to you!
I added ornamental grasses next to the planters to soften the front of the tall black planters and to add height behind the rest of the mums and cabbages I would eventually add in.

*Pro Tip: Mix & Match Your Planter pots!
Do not worry about matching your planters!
I like to mix and match my baskets and planter pots. I try to purchase my planters in pairs but sometimes I just mix and match so things do not feel “cookie cutter.”
In the picture below, you will see 7 different types of planter pots!!

*Pro-Tip: Mix up your mums by adding different types of plants for variety in height, texture and color!
My favorite fall plants to use to decorate, other than mums are:
Celosia
Cabbage
Ornamental Grasses
Aster

Here, in my Fall porch from 2 years ago, I referred to Celosia as “mum buddy’s” because that is what they were labeled as when I bought them at our local grocery store.

It’s true!
Celosia really are the mums best buddy!!
I love the way their vibrant color pops and their shape adds varying interest when placed next to the mums and asters.
Celosia is also beautiful when used alone, like I did below for our “early Fall porch” before my big mum trip to the Amish greenhouse.

For the first time this year, I added Asters to our window flower box.

I love how adding the asters in the window box, just keeps the Fall porch party going a little farther!
And finally?
It’s time to layer in the pumpkins!
Personally, I love using Cinderella or fairytale pumpkins in muted light oranges and greens and adding in a white pumpkin here and there!

I also do a “stack test” while I am at the greenhouse to see which pumpkins will cooperate with one another and stack well together. 🙂

And that is a wrap friend!
fall front porch pro tips summary:
- Remove everything from the porch!
- Clean cobwebs, leaves and dirt off the porch by sweeping or hosing off the steps and porch.
- Organize white pumpkins, cinderella pumpkins, mums and Fall flowers off to the side of the porch.
- Begin adding at least 2 oversized mums to large planters or statement planter pots to create “anchor flower pots.”
- Next, add in a variety of Fall natural elements, such as ornamental grasses and cabbages to layer height, color and texture to your Fall porch.
- Use a variety of flower planters, pots and baskets to create unexpected charm to personalize your very own diy fall porch!
- Finally, add your Fall pumpkins in various shapes and sizes, stacking two pumpkins on top of one another always adds a layer of whimsy and fun!
- Step back, grab your pumpkin spice latté and enjoy the view of your Fall front porch!
Oh I almost forgot the biggest and best tip of all when it comes to decorating your porch or any space in your home for that matter!
Pro Tip: Don’t stress about what everyone else is doing or what anyone else will think!
Decorate with what you love and the colors and things that speak to you and the end result will be something that YOU LOVE which is what matters most! 🙂
