Fall Porch Decor Then & Now & How To Keep Mums Alive
Front porch inspiration here we go!
First, let’s throw it back to 2 years ago when I had my first day home alone is 544 days.
And no.
544 is not a typo.
After homeschooling for a year…we sent the girls back to school two Fall seasons ago in September 2021 and with my second day home alone…
I spent my day painting our front door and the door trim. 🙂
Here is what our front door looked like before.
And here is what it looked like after I painted it all black.
I know right?
Total game changer.
Here is a side by side comparison.
You can get all the details on the painted front door makeover HERE in this post.
Last year, I discovered used both Mums and Mum Buddies for our front porch decor.
You can see more of last year’s Fall porch decor HERE in this post.
“Mum buddies” are pictured in the top right side of the picture above. I discovered them at our local Shoprite grocery store of all places last year and LOVED the height they added to our porch decorations.
Sadly, this year I had a difficult time finding the “mum buddies” that I loved decorating the porch with last year.
So instead, I improvised and used taller grasses and another type of taller Fall flower called Celosia, pictured below.
Let me back up…
One thing that I always always do before I decorate our porch for the season is…
I remove EVERYTHING from the porch.
Removing everything from the porch allows me the “clean slate” that I love to start with whenever I am decorating, whether it be a room or a porch.
I think it helps to start with a clean slate so that you can get creative and not pigeon hole yourself into keeping something in the same place simply because it has always been there.
And now, after starting with a clean slate and giving everything a good sweep and cleaning the front door windows…
Now, our Fall front porch decor looks like this today.
I have to say this Fall front porch, just makes me smile when I pull into our driveway.
New this year, are the addition of two small cabbages that I placed into clay pots from IKEA.
I also bought two new wicker baskets from IKEA, because I prefer the look of outdoor baskets over ceramic pots when it comes to creating a cozy and natural front porch aesthetic.
Last Fall we ordered these black Adirondack chairs from Amazon to replace our rocking chairs we had on the front porch that had rotted.
We LOVE these Adirondack chairs!
They require ZERO maintenance and we have left them outside on the porch every day for an entire year and they look brand new.
I added a blanket scarf from my closet to the back of the Adirondack chair…because it matched the pink and purple mum thing I have going on. 🙂
And there you have it friend!
The 2023 Fall Porch Decor is HERE and it is ready to greet our HOCO teenage guests for dinner before the dance!
Now it’s your turn!
Start with a clean slate…
Then grab your fairy tale pumpkins, mums, taller grasses and cabbages and don’t forget your lanterns for that nighttime glow!
I almost forgot the secret to keeping your mums alive!
If you want your mums to stay alive and last ALL season long, the secret is…
To ROOT SOAK them!
I shared this tip for keeping mums alive, earlier this week HERE in my Instagram Stories.
The secret to keeping mums alive is to root soak them, which esentially means to water them from the base.
This is easily done by filling a bucket of water and placing your Mum (you can leave the Mum in the grow bucket that it came with) and place it into the filled bucket of water.
Now, let the mum root soak and drink for a few hours.
That’s it!
Now, you know how to keep mums alive all season long! 🙂
Happy Fall porch decorating friend!
Living on a prayer,
Heather
