The time has finally come!
We’ve been quietly working on Livvy’s teen girl bedroom makeover since early January and today we are finally ready for her bedroom reveal!
If you’ve been around here for a minute, then you know I love a good bedroom makeover for pre-teen girls.
I have had so much fun over the last several years gifting our girls a bedroom makeover during their middle school years.
It’s right around that almost 13 year old age, when our girls have each started to express a desire for a more mature bedroom and also developed an appreciation for personality and expression through their bedroom decor and aesthetic.
As an interior designer, I get so excited when the time comes for a girl bedroom makeover for our daughters!

You may remember Eve’s coastal inspired bedroom makeover in HERE in this post from 2021.
Maci was next in the sister line and in 2024, when I gave her this teen girl bedroom makeover with a coastal boho aesthetic.
And last year, I gave one of my Home with Heather design clients a big girl bedroom makeover HERE in this post, for her daughter.
Meanwhile, Livvy has been oh so patiently waiting in the wings for her turn and oh my have we had so much fun collaborating on how she wanted her room to look and feel.
This bedroom makeover for Livvy was so interesting to me, because out of all three of our daughters, she wanted to have more of a voice in the design process, which I loved!!
Our 12 year old girl is growing up and she knows what she likes and what she doesn’t and I love that about her!!
Today on the blog, I can’t wait to share with you all the before and afters of this preppy coastal bedroom makeover!

But first, a trip down memory lane.
Because, what’s the fun in seeing the after…
If you don’t take a moment to pause and appreciate the very sweet “before” season…

I’m not crying…you’re crying. 🙂
Today on the blog, I’m sharing all the details of Livvy’s teen girl beach preppy bedroom along with all of the versions of this bedroom along the way.

Preppy Coastal Teen Girl Bedroom Makeover & Bedroom Essentials

This bedroom in our home has seen several different iterations over the years…
Once upon a time, it was Eve’s bedroom, when Maci was born and we kicked two year old Eve out of the nursery and crib…
I remember this moment like it was yesterday, she was so proud of her “shoe organization…”

Silly me, I thought she was napping. 🙂
Two years later, Maci joined Eve in this bedroom, when Livvy was born and inevitably kicked Maci out of the nursery and crib.
And for several years Eve and Maci shared this bedroom together…

And then came our bunkbed season!
A very exciting time in the Krout house that had three very giddy sisters celebrating on the top bunk after Shawn spent an entire Saturday assembling the new bunk beds…

Eventually, Maci moved down to the basement, and as we all knew she would, is loving life in her teen girl bedroom in the basement and Eve moved back to where it all started…into the original nursery.
While sweet Livvy received a sister promotion to a big girl bedroom, and for the last few years has made this bedroom her own…

And now?
Livvy is happy to report that her bedroom looks completely different!!

Now, let’s jump into the details of this preppy coastal bedroom makeover and my personal hot tip list of the 7 essentials that every teen girl bedroom needs to make it a huge success in not only looking beautiful but feeling like…home.
How To Start A Bedroom Makeover
Start With Fresh Paint…Then Add Something Extra To The Walls
(Think either wallpaper or add texture to the walls with trim molding, board and batten, etc )

SW 9641 Dew Drop Paint Color // Fluted Trim Pieces
We decided on the paint color Dew Drop by Sherwin Williams, which Livvy selected herself and it is BEAUTIFUL!

I also knew that I wanted to add texture to the longest wall of the bedroom to level up the cozy factor and add simple interest.
We purchased these unfinished white hardwood fluted case moldings from Home Depot and Shawn installed them on the wall, in order to create a skinny board and batten design.

This skinny board and batten wall design is very similar to the same design he installed in our own master bedroom makeover a few years ago.
You can see our bedroom makeover and how Shawn installed the board and batten wall DIY steps HERE in this post.
Painting the bedroom and adding the fluted trim pieces gave us the fresh start and cozy texture we needed to get the ball rolling with fresh inspiration!

Don’t forget to paint the ceiling for that extra refreshed feeling!

The power of paint always amazes me!!!

Floating Wall Shelves Are IKEA – Picture Ledge // Pin Board // Similar Jewelry Holder

Side Note: This is Livvy’s favorite little corner of her room! I love how the floating shelves add dimension on the wall and the pin board brings in opportunity for a little whimsy into her bedroom!
Real or artificial greenery

I added a small artificial Pothos plant from IKEA to add texture and soft movement on the floating wall picture ledge shelves, also from IKEA.
fresh window treatments: Pinch pleat curtain panels & Roman Shade

Two Pages Liz Linen Pinch Pleat Drapes in Color Beige White // Gold Curtain Rod // Drapery Rings // Woven Natural Cordless Roman Shade In Color Marble White
Hooks on repeat!

IKEA 3 Arm Swivel Wall Hook // Natural Wood Wall Hooks

We hung my favorite gold accordian wall hooks behind Livvy’s bedroom door to maximize her wall space and give her more places to hang her robe, backpack, purses etc. These accordian style hooks have become a staple throughout our home! We use them in the entryway on the wall to hang coats and also in the girl’s bathroom for bath towels!

Pro Tip: Teen girls need all the hooks for all the things! Sprinkle a variety of different types of hooks all around the room! They help add dimension to the wall and are functional for organization and double as room decor!
floor length mirror

Similar Gold Arched Floor Length Mirror // Gold Curtain Rod // Light Filtering Curtain Panels
Pro Tip: For a small bedroom, remove closet doors and replace with curtain rod and light filtering curtains for easy open and closing!
Memo pin board

We love the oversized Pottery Barn pin board and have had it for years, this time we decided to reorient it and hang it vertically versus horizontally for a little change. We also added this small pin board from Target and hung it on the wall, under her IKEA picture ledges.
Memo boards are a fun way to coralle memories and mementos such as dried flowers, ribbons, quotes, photos etc.

comfy seating for friends!

Papasan Chair // Decorative Seashell Pink Throw Pillow
We have had this white papasan chair from Eve’s coastal bedroom makeover and when we moved it into Livvy’s bedroom, we purchased this new papasan chair cushion from World Market to give the papasan a fresh feeling and more cushy seating.
