We are on a roll around here with all things pink, hearts and feel good vibes!
Anyone else’s heart need a hug right now?
You are in the right place friend!
If you caught last week’s post filled with tons of Valentine’s Day gift ideas and easy snacks to celebrate the month of love…
Then you already know, I am leaning BIG time into making our home bright and cheerful on the inside, despite the weather being chilly and gray on the outside!
While I have been very busy meeting with Home with Heather clients lately and building out my LTK Shop to make it easier for you to shop our home and all of the decor, room by room in one place – be sure to check it out on the LTK app HERE…
I found my hands were itching to get a little arts and crafty. 🙂
And?
My mantel was needing a little hug after it had been in clean slate mode ever since I took the holiday decor down.
You might remember that I took all of the Christmas and Winter decor down, just before we left to go out of town on our family ski trip.
I intentionally left our dining room looking like this, in order for me to re-think the room a bit…and prep my mind for Spring decor mode and all of these cute Spring decor items that I have my eye on.
And now?
I embraced my commitment to the idea of intentional wintering and I decided to get my DIY decor craft on!
Because?
Let’s face it.
When it’s freezing outside…it’s the best time to dive into a little crafting and playful decor that you might not necessarily have time for in the Spring & Summer months.
Do you want to see more of my DIY mantel decor decked out for Valentine’s Day & find out HOW I created this look?
Oh good.
*(If you see decor in this room you like & want to shop same or similar decor, I have linked the room decor and the craft supplies at the very bottom of this post for easy shopping & sourcing.)
Today, I am sharing some more pictures of our mantel decorated for Valentine’s Day to help us celebrate this freezing cold month and also help us to remember that playful colors and warmer temps are on their way here soon!
Plus, I will share the steps I took to decorate our mantel using just two items:
Tissue paper and my new decorating best friend…chicken wire.
And?
I will also share how I spray painted branches from our front yard and made this super cute Valentine’s Day 3D paper heart tree.
Are you ready to see how I made these budget-friendly DIY Valentine’s Day decorations?

Fun fact?
I don’t usually decorate for Valentine’s Day.
You probably remember this post I shared last month, “How to decorate for Valentine’s Day (the EASY way)”
And let me tell you, I still say throwing some chocolate candy in a heart shaped bowl and calling it a day WORKS for Valentine decor.
But as I mentioned, my hands were feeling crafty and honestly?
Much of the V-day decor that is out there to purchase?
I don’t really like.
Gasp.
I know.
It just all feels a little too “cookie-cutter” for my taste.
Which is why I decided to go out on a limb and collect these branches.
See what I did there.
Limb.
Branches.
I can’t help myself sometimes! 🙂
Valentine’s Day 3D Paper Heart Tree DIY Decor
First, I collected branches from our yard and I laid out an old sheet onto the front yard.
Aside – sometimes I think my neighbors think I have completely lost it. I mean who spray paints tree branches in freezing cold February?
Me.
That’s who.
Next, I used this Heirloom White Spray paint that I had on hand in my paint supply and I spray painted these brown branches WHITE!
Here is a picture of the branches, after I brought them inside ready to decorate.
Now, I was ready to make the tiny heart ornaments, in the form of 3D paper hearts to decorate my now white tree branches.
You need these 2 Supplies to make the 3D paper hearts:
I picked up this pink card stock paper stack from Michael’s along with some pink and red cotton twine.
(The light pink tissue paper pictured above, is what I used later, in order to make my tissue paper hearts that I decorated the mantel with. Also, the pink chiffon ribbon is my favorite ribbon. I used it to loosely tie around the neck of one of the flameless taper candles on the mantel.)
Using a small heart sticker as a template, I traced hearts onto the card stock paper.
I cut out the light pink hearts and set them aside.
Then, I picked out a darker shade of pink card stock and repeated the steps to trace and cut out more hearts.
Now, having both light pink hearts and darker pink hearts, I was ready to cut the twine.
I cut 6 inch pieces of twine and set them aside.
Next, I cut small slits in the hearts.
Using the dark hearts, I cut a slit from the top..
Using the light hearts, I cut the slit from the bottom.
Then, I fed the cut piece of twine, into the slit of the bottom of the heart.
Next, I slid the light pink heart, up to fit into the slit of the dark pink heart.
I tied the top of the twine into a knot and trimmed off the excess twine, after I made a knot at the top.
Now, the 3D paper hearts are ready to hang on the spray painted tree branches!
Ta Da!
Super easy.
Super budget-friendly.
Super pretty Valentine’s Day Mantel Decor!
Now, here is how I made tissue paper hearts using chicken wire on our mantel.
You need these 4 Supplies to make the Tissue Paper Heart Garland on the Mantel:
In case you didn’t know this about me already.
I am addicted to using chicken wire to decorate our mantel.
It all started last Fall, when I used chicken wire for the first time, to decorate our Fall mantel using pampas grass You can see the entire DIY and how I hang the chicken wire using clear command hooks, HERE in this post.
That was also the same time as when I bought our gorgeous ornate gold top mirror that I am so happy with!
I used the same chicken wire technique to decorate our mantel for Christmas, HERE in this post.
In a nut shell, I place 3 clear command hooks on our mantel and hang chicken wire from the hooks.
In this case, for decorating with tissue paper in the shape of a heart, I cut out a heart shape in the chicken wire first and hung the chicken wire heart onto the command hooks to get me started.
Next, I cut the pieces of pink and white tissue paper into 4 squares.
Then, I picked up one square piece of tissue at a time, pinching the center of the tissue and shaking the edges to flair out, I carefully fed the pinched center of tissue paper through the small openings of the chicken wire.
Funny side story…
I started creating this DIY Valentine tissue paper heart decor with RED tissue paper as you can see from above…and decided I didn’t like the red and stuck to my true color love language of PINK!!
After I decided to swap the red tissue for pink tissue, I began threading each piece of pink tissue paper through the chicken wire in the shape of 3 hearts and filled in the excess chicken wire with the white tissue paper pieces.
This is what the backside of the chicken wire looks like after almost filling in all of the chicken wire holes with tissue paper.
Every so often I would step back to see how the tissue paper hearts were shaping up and pretty soon I had this!
That’s it friend!
This budget friendly Valentine’s Day decor cost me a trip to the Dollar Store, Michael’s and my front yard for the branches and that’s it!
I have to say…
I am loving the view from our kitchen and am thrilled to enjoy this cheerful heart decor for the rest of February!
I hope this post brought some love and inspiration your way…sometimes you just have to make your own bright spot on the inside when things are not so bright on the outside!
Living on a prayer,
Heather
