Are you making a common decorating mistake? Here is a popular decorating mistake and how to easily fix it with furniture from Amazon.
We are on beach, bed repeat mode and have been for the last two weeks.
And?
It has been absolutely glorious.
My heart is full of salt air and gratitude.
If you have been reading this blog for more than a hot second, (to borrow my oldest daughters favorite phrase of choice lately,) then you already know this important fact about me.
I am a beach girl.
I am a sun, surf, shelling crazy person and I have proudly handed this beach girl life down to our 3 daughters.
If you missed this little snippet I shared reflecting on raising our 3 beach girls, you can see my thoughts on mothering them, HERE on Facebook or HERE on Instagram.
And speaking of shells…
If you have ever wondered what I do with all of the shells that I collect, you can find out how I love to decorate with shells, HERE in this post, “21 Simple Ways To Decorate With Shells.”
And, if you have been around here for a bit, then you also already know that every Summer we come to stay at our family beach condo, I love to tackle a small decorating project.
Last year, it was requesting Shawn to hang shiplap on this wall and ordering this Crystal Tide watercolor canvas art by Lindsay Letters to hang up on the shiplap.
You can see the decorating evolution of this beach condo over the years, HERE in this post and more pictures from last Summer’s project including hanging woven shades in our beach bay window, HERE in this post.
But this year?
I decided it was time to tackle refreshing this side of the room, starting with this common decorating mistake.
Can you spot the decorating mistake from this photo below?
Today on the blog, I am sharing this common decorating mistake and the exact piece of furniture we ordered from Amazon to correct this decorating mistake.
Plus, we ordered and installed a new ceiling fan to replace the dark brown palm fan, also from Amazon that Shawn is so in love with! He would be truly happy sleeping on the sofa every night, just to sleep beneath the robust air flow that this new natural wood colored ceiling fan creates!

What You Need To Know About This Common Decorating Mistake & How To Fix It
For starters, if you read this post, “3 Decorating Mistakes & How I Fixed Them,” then you already know that this media console table has more than one problem.
The first problem that this console table has, is that it has too many things, and too many small things sitting on top of the flat surfaces.
The too many things and too many small things is a common decorating mistake that trips us up, when we are trying to “style” a piece of furniture.
But the bigger problem that this TV console table has is…
The media console is TOO SMALL for the TV.
Over the years, Shawn has replaced our television at the beach and while the TV has grown in size, the console table underneath the TV has remained the same.
And now?
This unbalanced pairing of television and table is an eyesore.
And as many scenarios are solved in today’s world…
This is another story of, Amazon to the rescue!!
Just as Amazon solved our master bedroom window treatment problem, HERE in THIS POST, with a custom sized woven bamboo shade, pinch pleat curtains and curtain rod to create the perfect WINNING window treatment combination for our bedroom.
Amazon to the rescue again, in this beach condo living room beach situation!
I took a risk and ordered this white rattan media console that has a whopping THREE reviews…and in very exciting news…
It is AMAZING!
This new rattan console tabla from Amazon has corrected the common decorating mistake of having a too small console table underneath the TV!
- Pro Tip : As a decorating rule of thumb, you want your media console table to extend a few inches beyond the edges of the TV on both sides, so that it helps to “ground” the television above.
Not only has this new media console table corrected the size of the television console, but it has also provided us with much needed storage space for our board games!
Let’s look at the before and after.
HOT TIP: The tripod brass floor lamp is from Target and is on SALE for $60 (regularly $100) right now, you can shop it HERE!
We love this floor lamp, it provides perfect lighting also fills the awkward corner perfectly!
After I styled the new console and coffee table with a few new finds from HomeGoods…
It was time to take down the big brown fan and replace it with a sleek natural wood fan that didn’t command such a distraction to the eye.
We ordered this new light wood ceiling fan with light on Amazon.
Are you ready for the final Before & After?
BEFORE
AFTER!
Ta da!
It truly is amazing how correcting the size and scale of furniture in a small space can make the room feel LARGER!
And by removing the distraction of the brown ceiling fan and replacing it with lighter wood, more sleek design makes the room feel more inviting and less crowded!
It can be ordered in different colors, with or without a light and also comes with a remote and has 6 fan speeds. We have enjoyed it for a week and Shawn is still talking about the remarkable the air movement the new fan provides!
Amazon for the WIN again and again!
Living on a prayer,
Heather

Heather, So many good tips! I have that table from Target but it’s in a nesting form with an identical smaller table. It’s in our pool house and I just love how it looks with a larger sectional. I agree, too many small things just looks cluttered and love the transformation.
Thank you Mary! Yes! Anytime I am struggling to decorate it is usually because I slipped into the mistake of using too many things and too many small things! Thanks so much for reading and sharing your comments here! Appreciate you!! XO, Heather
Your furbaby completes the room!
Totally! Willa Pup is the best accessory! Currently working on my husband for a second fur baby! 🙂
Heather,
I love the new console. It’s perfect for the room.
Thank you Rachel!! We love it too!!
