“Exactly how many more plants are we going to move into the bathroom?”
That is a direct quote from my husband, Shawn last week.
You see…I did not intend to turn our master bathroom into a greenhouse.
It just sort of – happened.
With all that Christmas going on downstairs…the real and faux evergreens invaded.
And?
They took over the spaces where my sweet, adorable, house plants and palms used to play in the sunbeams.
And so?
The plants needed a VRBO for the holiday.
I gave them an unlimited stay at the Four Seasons Spa…otherwise known as our master bathroom.
Turns out?
They are soaking in the sun and humidity and they are VERY happy house plants.
And, just between you and me?
They make me smile every time I walk into our master bathroom.
Especially, the palm tree.
Because…who doesn’t want to see a palm tree in freezing cold January?
Exactly.
It’s the little things…always the little things.
Side note – If you’re like us…we buy a palm tree or two every Summer from Home Depot to place around the patio our backyard.
And then every year, after the first frost they die and we toss them.
This year?
This year, we got smart and brought this guy in before the frost and I am so happy we did. Makes me feel like Summer even though it is very, very much Winter outside here in Maryland.
While these house plants are happy at their Four Seasons Spa…there is something else happy in this master bathroom.
Can you guess what it is?
Our painted bathroom cabinets are still smiling friends.
Oh yes.
The painted cabinets of our master bathroom vanity are as happy as the day they first met my paint brush.
When we first gave our master bathroom a room refresh during quarantine…it was a project that helped to pass the time.
And now?
Now, this DIY painted cabinet project is earning an award for surviving the test of time from the daily abuse of five people.
Because, let’s face it.
With three daughters…there is no such thing as a ‘His and Hers’ master bathroom.
No, the house plants are not the only ones who crowd around the sinks of this bathroom vanity.
This room gets a work out and these painted cabinets have me feeling all the happy thoughts when I think about how much money we saved with this budget master bathroom makeover.
Just a reminder.
Here is what we started with during the days of “how many house projects can we tackle during quarantine.”
These poor cabinet and drawer doors and faces had seen better days after years and years of wear and tear and flat out neglect.
And so…after a good ol’ fashioned purge and clean out of the vanity from all the things…belonging to all five people?
Let’s just say this master bathroom refresh done on a budget...well, she is still sparkling friends.
Fun fact?
This picture has become my 2nd “most pinned” picture on the planet that is called –Pinterest.
(Stay tuned next week to find out what my #1 pinned picture on Pinterest is currently.)
Yes, these are happy cabinets that have welcomed their new neighbors…happy house plants.
How Did The Painted Cabinets Hold Up? A Before & After Budget Bathroom Refresh 20 Months Later Update
Let’s just look at one more “Before” pic for a fun comparison and test of time shall we?
And now, this picture below is one I snapped last week…20 months after I painted these bathroom cabinets!
After I shared this painted cabinet project of our DIY master bathroom refresh in this original post.
And, after this post where I painted our kitchen island and kitchen cabinets. (before our DIY kitchen island remodel, which you can see here in this post.)
You had A LOT of questions.
Questions like:
What was the exact process for painting the cabinets?
Where are the vanity mirrors from?
Did we sand the cabinets?
What is the paint color?
Did you use a paint primer?
I am happy to give you all the answers to all of the questions and give you the step by step on how we painted our bathroom cabinets and more right here, right now.
The process for painting the cabinets was really quite simple, it went like this:
Step By Step Painted Cabinet Process
First, we removed the cabinet doors and cleaned the cabinets with warm soapy water.
Then, we used a light hander sander on the cabinet faces.
We decided to change the hardware of the cabinets from a knob to a pull so we had to fill the hole from the old knobs with this spackling paste.
Then, we lightly sanded the cabinet faces again.
After the second sanding, we painted a coat of Sherwin Williams Primer followed by a first and second coat of the Sherwin Williams paint color I selected.
Finally, we allowed the paint to dry for several hours, installed the new hardware and then re-attached the cabinet doors!
That’s it!
Now, let’s talk about my favorite blue-gray paint color for a hot minute.
The paint color I used for our bathroom cabinets, pictured above and below is Gray Screen by Sherwin Williams. (Gray Screen SW7071).
I have found Gray Screen to be the perfect blue gray paint that simply stuns when paired with champagne bronze hardware, like these cabinet pulls that I have on both the bathroom and kitchen cabinets now.
Not only did I paint the master bathroom cabinets, and the bathroom walls and our old kitchen island, (before our DIY kitchen remodel which you can see here in this post) I also used Gray Screen on my dresser in our bedroom, that used to be the nursery changing table and baby dresser.
You can see the painted dresser with champagne gold knobs here in this post.
Simply put…if you are looking for a beautiful blue gray paint color to paint all the things – walls, cabinets, furniture and more?
Gray Screen by Sherwin Williams does not dissapoint.
As for the sources for the champagne gold vanity mirrors, faucets and more, you can find the links at the bottom of this post.
But the real question that we started with at the beginning of this post…
How are the painted cabinets holding up?
The answer…
Beautifully.
The painted cabinets are still as beautiful and budget friendly as the day they met their first brush stroke.
And in other news?
They love their new neighbors.
Paula the Palm, Sally the snake plant…kidding!!
I kid!
I do not name my plants…although I do hear that is good for them. 🙂
I hope this post has helped to inspire you to take the plunge and paint those cabinets!
Oh! I almost forgot!
Those drawers that I lined with gold polka dot paper place mats?
They are about to get a post holiday present from Amazon soon!
Because, I am ordering these clear storage bins to organize all the things.
Let me know if you want to see the before and after of that organizational process!
From my happy painted cabinets and house plants to you…
Have a happy day friend!
