Looking for outdoor Christmas decorating ideas and inspiration? Here is a beautiful and historic home traditionally decorated for the holiday.
Well that was fun!
This is the phrase that keeps coming to my mind every time by brain slows down enough to breathe.
Yep.
That.Was.FUN.
Rewind to the Fall, when I first received the initial inquiry from the home owner, as to whether I could or would be interested in decorating her beautiful and well known home in our community for Christmas this year.
Um…yes please!
Decorating for Christmas is my absolute favorite!
But here are 2 things you need to know.
I have never decorated the exterior of a client’s home for Christmas…until now.
Yes, I do love decorating our own front porch for the different seasons. In fact, you can see our front porch decorated for Christmas last year HERE in this post.
But also?
I have never decorated a home with an exterior and porch as large as this.
In case you were wondering…
This isn’t just any home.
Nope.
This is a home that families have been visiting year after year during Christmastime.
With their kids piled in the car, decked in their Christmas P.J.’s and with cousins from out of town piled onto their laps, coco in hand and Christmas carols tuned and turned up.
Because?
Because everyone in our hometown knows you just HAVE to see the Jones Family Home all decorated for Christmas every year.
Yes.
It’s one of the homes that is at the tippy top of your list when you are making a mental note of sights you want to see and be sure to drive by during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
And so?
This particular client request was a TRUE HONOR.
I am grateful to God and to Beverly Jones for offering me this wonderful opportunity.
So today friends, I am sharing a photo tour of the Jones family home that I decorated (along with two amazing assistants) for Christmas along with the outdoor Christmas decor info and links to all of the new items that were purchased.
Are you ready to see what the outside of this beautiful home looks like now all decorated for Christmas?
Oh Good.
Come and see.
Wait Until You See This Historic Home’s Outdoor Christmas Decorations
Are you ready to see this historic home all lit up with Christmas magic?
Cue the Clark Griswold drumroll…..
Here is a little comparison for all of the Before & After lovers.
Does it make you want to hop in the car tonight to look at the Christmas lights where you live?
Here are the outdoor decoration details…
As with most beginning decorating scenes, when you get started…things can tend to look a little disorganized or shall I say…WILD.
But that’s just how the magic get’s started.
You just have to dive in and get to work.
Which is exactly what we did.
While I was doing the personal shopping for my client, I wasn’t falling in love with any of the outdoor garland strands out there.
Instead of using only one type and strand of garland, I picked out two different pre-lit garland strands and wrapped them together to make one fuller garland, that would look substantial enough when hanging on the porch railings.
I laid this 18 ft Prelit Kingston garland down on the porch and wrapped this 25 ft pre lit LED garland around the shorter strand.
Below is a picture of several garlands (after I wrapped them together) patiently waiting to be hung up.
Here is what the individual garlands look like when I bought them at Home Depot.
We used these clear zip ties to hang the garland onto the porch railings.
Once we finished hanging the garland on the lower porch railings with these zip ties, we headed to the roof to hang the garland on the upper railings.
Doubling the garland strands was time consuming.
However, I am thrilled with the fullness and overall look of how they appear hanging on the porch railings!
By the way…
If you’re looking for gorgeous big red velvet bows?
Don’t go to Homesense.
I bought them all.
Sorrryyyyy! 🙂
They were so pretty and so reasonably priced and I love how it keeps the traditional Christmas spirit alive in the holiday decor of this historic home.
Notice that twinkling twig tree?
I mentioned to my client that he is like the unexpected guest at the dinner party.
You didn’t know you wanted him to come…
But now you are SO glad he arrived!!
Honestly.
We are in LOVE with these twinkling twig trees from Pottery Barn.
I placed one on the left and one on the right side of the front porch steps, and staked them directly into the ground of the mulch bed.
Even better?
These twinkling twig trees can be used for outdoor or indoor decor, come in both brown and white, in multiple sizes and are on major SALE right now.
They also come with the ground stakes and rope you can use to use secure them in the ground. (We ordered two of the brown 7′ size)
Ruuuunnnn to grab them! They are STUNNING!
They are also super easy to put together!
BIG WIN in my book! 🙂
Also from Pottery Barn are the pine wreaths with ornaments on the doors. I picked these up at the Pottery Barn outlet but they also happen to be on big time sale right now online HERE.
You can see the wreath better below in the day time.
If you are not in the habit of layering your door mat with a base rug yet…now is the time of year to start!
This layered look makes for such a cozy and inviting first impression to your guests.
This red Merry Christmas door mat from Target is sadly no longer in stock. However, I just ordered this mat from Target for our front door and can’t wait for it to arrive. Will probably layer it with this plaid outdoor rug.
The red plaid base rug that is pictured above is from Wayfair and is on sale right now HERE online.
(Linking a few more cute holiday door mats at the bottom of this post along with all of the decorations from this post.)
Last but not least.
These 7.5 Balsam Fir artificial Christmas trees are the stars of the show, especially when you drive or walk up close to the Jones home.
They were easy to put together (according to my cute helper hubby) and they are SO FULL and beautiful!
We also bought 4 of these 4.5′ potted artificial firs from Home Depot and placed them at the top of the steps.
I almost forgot!
We ordered ten of these large solar lanterns from Amazon.
I originally had them placed on the steps, as you can see in the picture above.
But because of the glow of the pre-lit garland, the solar lights were not coming on (which is why I had to move them closer to the middle of the steps in order for them to come on.) So, we moved them to line the driveway along the mulch bed instead.
They look so pretty!
In case you missed it from my Fall front porch post HERE, I LOVE using solar lanterns on the porch and patio all year round!
And there you have it friend!
Like I said in the beginning…
THAT.WAS.FUN!
I hope you enjoyed this little outdoor decoration tour of the beautiful home I was honored to decorate for Christmas. :).
If you’re a local friend – be sure to drive through the Jones Home driveway in order to get the full experience of the Christmas magic in person for yourself, because these iPhone photos only capture so much.

BIG thanks to my two favorite Christmas elves…I could not have done this without their help!
