Maybe it was all that talk over the weekend…
…about what I’m buying now to decorate for Christmas.
But all that decorating excitement carried over to Monday.
And while I didn’t start decorating with my favorite faux garland that I have and love to use for Christmas…
I did start decorating our mantel with something else for Fall.
Any guesses?
If you watched my Instagram stories from earlier today…then you already know.
I’ll give you a hint.

You know your girl here loves her Pampas Grass.
If you also love the look of pampas grass, then you might be interested in the quick tips I have shared previously about how to maximize pampas fluff, cut down on the shedding and styling them.
You can see my quick tips on using pampas grass, HERE in this Instagram highlight.
Last year, around this time a dear friend offered me that chance to give her beautiful Pampas grasses a haircut.
And this year?
I returned…with helpers.
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_6648-768x1024.jpg)
Yes, this year I decided to take my friend up on her generous pampas grass offer and actually wound up making two trips to bring home enough to…
yep you guessed it.
Create and decorate our fall mantel with pampas grass.
But instead of placing them in a tall vase or container…I wanted to create a pampas garland effect, similar to how I would decorate our mantel with strands of Christmas garland.
But how?
I was stumped myself.
Until?
Until, I came across another blogger’s instagram, who had a hack for styling mantels with floral picks.
The magic ingredient?
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_7451-768x1024.jpg)
Chicken Wire!
Say what?
Yes! Chicken wire!
I know!
I am SO excited to share this chicken wire decorating hack, for hanging garland and floral picks on your mantel this holiday season!!
One trip to Home Depot for a roll of chicken wire and your girl was in full tilt, fall mantel decorating mode.

Raise your hand if you want to know how I decorated this Fall mantel using chicken wire.
Oh good.
I’m ready to dish the decorating details so you can do it too!
(or hire me to to it for you – HA!)
After I gathered my Fall inspiration pieces and had a general vision in my head for how I wanted to decorate with the pampas grass, I got started with installing the chicken wire on the mantel.
First, I unrolled the chicken wire on the floor.
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/how-to-decorate-a-mantel-for-the-holiday-768x1024.jpg)
(I bought my chicken wire from Home Depot, but you can also order it on Amazon HERE as part of the Prime Early Access Sale.)
Next, I pressed and stuck a clear command hook down onto the flat part of our mantel and hung one end of the chicken wire on it.
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_7455-768x1024.jpg)
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/how-to-decorate-a-holiday-mantel-for-fall-768x1024.jpg)
Then, I stretched the chicken wire across the front of the mantel and placed a second command hook in the middle-ish of the mantel to hang the center of the chicken wire from.
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/how-to-decorate-a-mantel-with-pampas-grass-768x1024.jpg)
I did not attach a command strip on the far end yet, because I was unsure how far I wanted to extend the pampas grass garland down the mantel.
Next, I placed a 3rd command strip hook close to the far left side, in order to hang another piece of chicken wire VERTICALLY down the left side of the fireplace trim.

![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_7461-768x1024.jpg)
Now, that I had my chicken wire base installed, using 3 command hooks to hold it in place, I was ready to start placing the pampas grass stems!
I began placing the pampas grass stems through the holes of the chicken wire.

In case you are wondering…
This is about the time when I began to wonder if I had any clue what I was doing!
HA!
But this is what I have learned.
Anytime, you try something new, that you have never done before…
There is going to be doubt.
In case you don’t know what you are doing…some of the time…or most of the time?
Read this…it will make you feel better.
Doubt is a normal part of the process…a lot of the time.
Where was I?
Oh yes.
Placing the pampas grass stems one by one into the chicken wire backdrop frame.
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/home-with-heather-fall-mantel-decorating-769x1024.jpg)
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_7478-768x1024.jpg)
I started adding the pampas grass stems from the left corner, because I knew I wanted to have the pampas grass pointing in two different directions, all stemming from the left corner.
Once I had a few pointing away from the corner horizontally, I started adding pampas stems pointing towards the floor.
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_7467-768x1024.jpg)
Next, I began adding more textural elements of color with hydrangea clippings and another variety of natural grass. (also from a friends yard.)
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_7473-768x1024.jpg)
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_7475-768x1024.jpg)
I kept adding pampas stems across and down, feeding it through the chicken wire, until I was satisfied with the fullness of the pampas grass garland.
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/how-to-decorate-a-fall-mantel-with-pampas-grass-768x1024.jpg)
Once, I knew where I was going to thin out and end the pampas grass garland stretching across the front of the mantel, I was ready to cut off the remaining chicken wire that was dangling and hanging out on the far right side.
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_7481-768x1024.jpg)
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_7482-768x1024.jpg)
I placed the last command strip onto the top of the mantel to hang the far edge of chicken wire on it.
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_7521-1-768x1024.jpg)
And after all that placing and fluffing of pampas grass stems and hydrangea clippings?
I stepped back to look at what I had just created!

Not too bad for a first time pampas grass garland creator if I do say so myself! 🙂
One thing I do know?
The view from washing my dishes just got a whole lot prettier!

Who would ever know that by looking at this DIY Pampas Grass Garland…

That there was a backdrop of chicken wire and command hooks holding this beauty together!?
![](https://heatherkrout.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/IMG_7522-768x1024.jpg)
Do you know what else I love about using chicken wire to decorate my mantle?
I love that I still have space ON my actual mantle to place decorative elements!
Like this new ornate gold mirror 🙂 and of course my absolute favorite new Amazon purchase, these flameless LED taper candles have plenty of room to show off, because the garland is hanging on the front of the mantle instead of on top of it!

…enjoying the new view and dreaming up Christmas mantel decor. 🙂
Of course, I will probably use my favorite faux pine garland (so many of you messaged me after this post and told me you ordered it too – you will LOVE IT!) and add in layers using these stems and these and these and maybe these.
I almost forgot!

Oh and if you don’t have a friend who offers you to give her pampas grass a haircut?
I found these pampas grass stems on Amazon which look very similar to the texture and color of the pampas stems I used for my Fall mantel. I have them listed in my Amazon Storefront also.
I hope you loved this Fall Mantel reveal!
Living on a prayer,
Heather

Interesting, but very difficult to read due to frequent changes in font size. Also, I am not on instagram, so I don’t have a clue about how to keep this grass from shedding, or the other tips you offered on instagram.
Hi Kim! Thank you for your feedback on the changes in font. I will keep that in mind for my future posts. My quick tips for decorating with pampas grass are: 1. ) Shake them off well while standing outside 2.) Allow them to lay in the sun for 3-4 hours to maximize their fluffy factor as they will begin to open up more in the sun. 3.) Use a hair dryer to fluff and blow off extra shedding 4.) Spray with aerosol hairspray before bringing inside to reduce continued shedding. Hope that helps!
Gorgeous!!!!!
Thank you so much Nancy! XO, Heather
Beautiful, just BEAUTIFUL. I just knew chicken wire would come in handy one day!!
Thank you for being my assistant!! XO
